Jean-ah Poquelin

Cable shows the differences between the two by saying Jean was "bold,frank, impetuous, chivalric adventurer" and that Jacques was "gentle, studious, book-loving recluse. Jean went to the Governor and asked that they not put a road by his house and his brother was never seen. Jean was of "short, broad frame, with bronzed leonine face" and his "herculean breat, hard and grizzled." Jacques was described as "ghostly white...eyes cast down and labored step...a leper."    Little White was "mild, kind-hearted little man" with no fear. I think little White and Jacques have the same temperment and body frame yet White seems a little more bold. I think that Cable criticizes the ethnic stereotyping by showing that Jean didnt kill his brother when the whole town had shunned him for it. He also showed that the aristocracy wasn't so noble by showing that they killed Jean for nothing at all.

    While i understand what you mean about how it shows that aristocracy wasn't so noble, i think it more mirrors how throughout history whites (or aristocrats) have preyed on the minority group in a way to convenience themselves to what they wanted in society. While they didn't kill Jean themselves (he was dead when the mob arrived) they did in a sense kill his spirit in how they changed the surrounding community. This killing of the spirit parallels how black/slaves where deprived of freedoms and their spirit to live in however they want just like the whites could.

    Good conversations here. Justin, your comment reminds me of the "Immenent Domain" laws that forced Arlington homeowners to give up property for the new Cowboys stadium--after all, they were living in poor house--they made money. There was no thought given that some of these families had lived there for generations. Consider ocean front propert--Immenent domain is convenient when society feels the property is too valuable to allow poor people to maintain their ownership of ocean front property.

    I agree that maybe in phyzique little white and jaques are more alike, however, I think that Jean and Little white have more in common. They are very bold characters. Both not afraid to stand up for what they have, however little that may be.
